Bank Stabilisation Using Flex MSE.
The Goal:
The residences at Hempleman Drive in Akaroa, New Zealand, offer picturesque views of the Akaroa Harbour. However, this stunning location came with a challenge – the erosion of a steep bank threatened the stability and safety of these beautiful properties. To combat this issue, the property owners sought the expertise of HMR Contracting, with Carlton leading the project, and they decided to utilise Flex MSE from Advance Landscape Systems as the solution.
The primary goal of the project was to stabilise the eroding bank along Hempleman Drive to protect the residences and infrastructure. This required an environmentally sustainable solution that would blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, ensuring the long-term stability of the area.
The Challenge:
- Erosion Threat: The erosion of the bank had reached a critical point, posing a significant threat to the stability of the residential area and surrounding infrastructure.
- Environmental Sensitivity: Akaroa is renowned for its natural beauty, and any solution implemented needed to be environmentally sensitive, minimising disruption to the landscape.
- Limited Space: The project site had limited space for construction activities, making it challenging to execute traditional stabilisation methods.
- Regulatory Compliance: The project needed to comply with local regulations and environmental standards, requiring careful planning and execution.
The Solution:
Carlton, the project manager from HMR Contracting, oversaw the implementation of the Flex MSE system. The process involved the following steps:
- Site Assessment: A thorough assessment of the site was conducted to determine the extent of erosion and the most suitable locations for Flex MSE installation.
- Design Customisation: Flex MSE was customised to match the aesthetic requirements of the area while ensuring optimal functionality.
- Preparation: The eroded bank was prepared for Flex MSE installation, which included removing unstable soil and ensuring proper drainage.
- Flex MSE Installation: Flex MSE geobags, filled with a specialised soil mix, were installed on the bank. Native vegetation was planted to enhance stability and improve the ecological health of the area.
- Monitoring and Maintenance: The project team established a monitoring and maintenance plan to ensure the continued effectiveness of the system and the health of the vegetation.
Why Flex MSE was chosen for this project:
The utilisation of Flex MSE at Hempleman Drive has yielded significant positive outcomes:
- Stability: The erosion problem has been effectively addressed, ensuring the long-term stability of the bank and protecting the residences and infrastructure.
- Environmental Benefits: Native vegetation has thrived on the Flex MSE system, contributing to habitat restoration and overall environmental improvement.
- Aesthetics: The Flex MSE system seamlessly integrates with the natural landscape, preserving the scenic beauty of the area.
- Regulatory Compliance: The project successfully complied with local regulations and environmental standards.
The bank stabilisation project at Hempleman Drive in Akaroa, using Flex MSE from Advance Landscape Systems and managed by Carlton of HMR Contracting, demonstrates the effectiveness of environmentally sensitive solutions in addressing erosion challenges. This project serves as a model for sustainable bank stabilisation in ecologically sensitive areas, ensuring the preservation of both property and natural beauty.
