A strong example of green infrastructure tailored to the demands of alpine residential development.
The Goal:
Set within Queenstown’s alpine landscape, this residential project aimed to stabilise an erosion-prone slope below a newly built home along Old Homestead Road. With the house overlooking Lake Whakatipu and offering uninterrupted views toward Frankton, it was essential that the solution enhanced the site’s natural beauty while providing robust structural performance.
The homeowner sought a retaining system that could meet the challenges of steep terrain and an arid microclimate, while also supporting native planting and adding long-term value to the property. With landscape works led by Outerspace Landscapes and product supply by Advance Landscape Systems, the Flex MSE Vegetated Wall System was selected as the most suitable approach. The terraced, green wall provided stability, ecological integration, and visual appeal, delivered on time for the property’s pre-Christmas market listing.
The Challenge:
The project involved stabilising a steep, erosion-prone slope located directly below the home’s primary outdoor living areas. The site presented several key challenges:
- The location was exposed to hot, dry summers and freezing winters, making vegetation establishment difficult.
- The rocky terrain limited access for heavy equipment but provided a stable foundation.
- The homeowner needed a fast-tracked solution to align with the goal of listing the property before the holiday season.
- Maintaining soil moisture and supporting plant survival through the critical summer period was essential for early establishment.
In addition to these performance requirements, the solution needed to present a soft, natural aesthetic that complemented the rugged landscape and premium residential setting.
The Solution:
Flex MSE was chosen for its ability to deliver both structural resilience and a vegetated, natural finish. The retaining wall was built using a terraced design to break up height, follow the land’s contours, and create pockets for planting. With a total height of approximately 3.5 metres, the system was installed directly onto the site’s rock base, providing a solid and durable foundation.
To support rapid vegetation establishment in the dry summer period, each Flex MSE bag was pre-saturated before installation. An automated irrigation system was integrated behind the vegetated face to provide moisture during the hottest months. The wall was reinforced with ACEGrid GG40 at every third row to meet engineering requirements and ensure long-term stability.
Key features of the Flex MSE solution included:
- Wall height: Approximately 3.5 metres.
- Substrate: Solid rock base for maximum foundation stability.
- Terraced design: Helps reduce wall pressure and enhances visual integration.
- Irrigation system: Installed to support plant establishment during the dry season.
- Reinforcement: ACEGrid GG40 installed for internal stability and consent compliance.
Why Flex MSE was chosen for this project
Flex MSE offered a versatile and visually integrated solution to meet the project’s demanding environmental and timeline constraints.
Key advantages included:
- Adaptability to climate extremes: The geotextile face and internal structure supported planting in both high-heat and freeze-thaw conditions.
- Fast installation: The modular system allowed the contractor to meet tight project timelines and ensured completion ahead of the holiday property market.
- Terraced flexibility: The stepped design helped break up vertical loads and created natural planting zones.
- Visual impact and property value: The finished wall provided a green focal point that complemented the landscape and enhanced market appeal.
- Structural performance: Flex MSE tolerated seasonal ground movement and performed reliably on rock foundations in extreme weather conditions.
Vegetation Strategy
Planting selections were tailored to suit the site’s exposed, low-rainfall conditions. The species mix was chosen for drought resistance, low maintenance, and visual contrast.
- Poa cita (Silver Tussock): Iconic to the Central Otago region, offering high survivability and a natural aesthetic.
- Cenchrus setaceus (Crimson Fountain Grass): Provides ornamental movement and striking seasonal colour.
- Coprosma kirkii: A hardy native groundcover, ideal for erosion control.
- Lomandra ‘Lime Tuff’: A robust, lime-green clumping grass with excellent drought tolerance.
These species were planted directly into the Flex MSE bags and quickly established with irrigation support. The resulting vegetation delivers year-round coverage and contributes to long-term slope stability.
