On a rural property in Ōhau, Kāpiti Coast, the HydraFlex Pro pond liner provided a flexible and durable solution to rejuvenate a natural pond challenged by seasonal drying and complex root systems.
The Goal:
Located on a rural property in Ōhau, Kāpiti Coast, the project aimed to rejuvenate an existing natural pond fed by a roadside creek that frequently dried up during warmer months. The client sought to install a durable, flexible, and watertight pond liner that could retain water year-round, protect against root intrusion from surrounding mature trees, and create a stable habitat for fish and aquatic plants, all within a manageable budget.
The Challenge:
The kidney-shaped pond was surrounded by established guardian trees with large, exposed roots, making conventional liner installation difficult. The irregular pond shape and root protrusions demanded a flexible solution to conform to complex contours without excessive material waste. Additionally, the clay-based subgrade cracked during dry spells, causing rapid water loss once creek inflow stopped. The project required a UV-stable, puncture-resistant liner system capable of withstanding environmental stresses and root pressure while maintaining a natural pond contour.

The Solution:
Advance Landscape Systems conducted an on-site consultation and supplied a custom-fabricated HydraFlex Pro pond liner in two precision-cut sections to minimise wastage and simplify installation:
- Left-side liner: 20 m × 15.2 m
- Right-side liner: 12.5 m × 12.5 m
- Total coverage: 462.75 m²
Unavoidable offcuts were repurposed to line the creek inlet channel, enhancing erosion control and ensuring a comprehensive containment system. The client joined the two liner sections on-site using butyl joining tape and marine-grade polyurethane sealant, creating a seamless, watertight bond. HydraFlex Pro’s reinforced polyethylene composite provided the flexibility and puncture resistance necessary to accommodate root systems and subgrade irregularities. HydraFlex Pro comes with a 20-year material warranty pro rata, ensuring long-term confidence in its performance.

Why HydraFlex Pro was chosen for this project
- Flexibility and durability: Capable of conforming to complex pond contours and root structures without damage.
- UV stability: Ensures long-term resilience through fluctuating weather conditions.
- Puncture resistance: Protects against tree root intrusion and uneven ground.
- Water retention: Provides a permanent impermeable barrier preventing water loss through seepage.
- Cost-effectiveness: Delivers a practical, long-lasting geomembrane solution suitable for residential ponds.
- Warranty: Backed by a 20-year material warranty pro rata, giving added peace of mind.
Since installation, the HydraFlex Pro pond liner has consistently maintained water levels during dry summer months, supporting a thriving aquatic habitat. The textured surface improved soil adhesion on pond slopes, promoting natural establishment of aquatic vegetation. The client further enhanced the pond’s natural appearance by installing EcoWool Mulch Matting around the perimeter, planted with native grasses and marginal species to blend the liner edges into the landscape and provide erosion protection. The pond liner’s long-term durability is supported by a 20-year material warranty pro rata, underscoring the product’s reliability.
This project successfully balanced ecological, aesthetic, and functional goals, transforming the pond into a year-round water feature with long-term stability and habitat value. It demonstrates the versatility of HydraFlex Pro in meeting complex residential pond challenges with a durable, flexible, and visually integrated solution.
