Landscape solutions that restore, establish, and protect.

Robust Landscaping Solution for Stormwater Swale

The Goal

Ikea New Zealand’s new 20,000 m² external warehouse at The Landing Business Park, Māngere, developed and owned by Auckland Airport, required extensive landscaping as part of the site development. The facility provides storage for products ahead of national distribution via the Sylvia Park store. A primary objective of this landscaping project was to stabilise the stormwater swale at the rear of the distribution centre while remediating it into a thriving natural environment. The project aimed to control erosion, suppress weeds, support native plant establishment, and create green spaces that softened the visual impact of the large industrial complex for staff and visitors.

The Challenge

The swale drain is subject to high water flows during heavy rainfall events, requiring a heavy-duty erosion control solution capable of withstanding frequent inundation. Plants needed to establish quickly to stabilise the bank and provide immediate erosion control. At the same time, the development sought to improve the visual amenity of a large industrial site, creating a green space that balanced functionality with aesthetics. Delivering a resilient landscape solution under these environmental conditions was a key challenge.

The Solution

The project combined EcoWool Mulch Matting 1000gsm with Natural Timber Pegs to deliver a durable and sustainable solution. EcoWool’s dense wool fibres provided robust weed suppression for up to two years and helped retain moisture while slowly releasing nitrogen into the soil to support plant establishment and long-term health. Its heavy-duty composition allowed it to withstand the swale’s frequent inundation and high water movement, performing effectively where lighter matting products would likely fail.

Natural Timber Pegs, manufactured from durable untreated timber, securely anchored the matting in place, ensuring stability even during stormwater surges. Together, these products provided immediate erosion control while supporting the successful establishment of the landscaped swale.

Why EcoWool 1000gsm was chosen for this project

EcoWool Mulch Matting 1000gsm was selected for its heavy-duty erosion control and reliable weed suppression capabilities, ideal for the swale’s high-flow conditions. Fully biodegradable, it provides up to two years of effective erosion and weed management and retains soil moisture. Its wool fibres’ natural nitrogen properties slowly release nutrients into the soil, supporting plant establishment and long-term health. EcoWool’s durability allows it to withstand frequent inundation and water movement, while Natural Timber Pegs securely anchor the matting even in heavy rainfall conditions. Made from untreated, durable timber, the pegs offer an environmentally friendly alternative to steel and support the long-term stability of the planting system.

Planting Strategy

The swale was planted with native species, including hard grasses selected for rapid establishment, soil stabilisation, and tolerance to flooding conditions. Carparking areas were enhanced with specimen trees, installed using tree stakes and poly webbing tree tie systems to ensure strong early growth. This approach balanced ecological, functional, and aesthetic considerations, while creating an inviting environment around the distribution centre.

Performance and Outcomes

Since installation, the EcoWool 1000gsm Mulch Matting has performed exceptionally well, particularly through Auckland’s wet winter season. Even during heavy rainfall events, the matting remained intact and provided reliable erosion control in the swale, demonstrating its strength and suitability for high-flow conditions. The result is a thriving swale, enhanced visual amenity for the distribution centre, and a high-quality landscaped environment. The project showcases The Plant People’s expertise in delivering sustainable, robust planting solutions, supported by Advance Landscape Systems’ quality products.
