Blackbridge Nurseries was engaged to deliver a mature screening planting along the boundary of Summerset Ellerslie, creating immediate privacy between the retirement village and neighbouring properties. However, buried underground services prevented conventional tree pit excavation, requiring an innovative planting solution.
Available through Advance Landscape Systems, Archipello.® Orbis planters provided an above-ground solution that enabled the installation of large specimen trees while becoming an integral feature of the landscape design.
The objective was to establish an immediate privacy screen using mature New Zealand native trees while overcoming the site’s underground service constraints.
A services plan completed before construction identified a water main located approximately 600mm below ground level, making conventional tree pit excavation impossible. The selected pūriri and tītoki were substantial specimen trees, ranging from 1,000L to 2,000L, with root balls up to one metre deep.
The mature trees were specified to provide instant screening along the boundary, making an alternative planting solution essential.
Archipello. Corten steel Orbis planters, without base, were selected to create an above-ground planting system capable of accommodating the exceptionally large root balls without disturbing the underground services. The generous 2-metre diameter planters comfortably encapsulated the trees, allowing the project to proceed without compromising existing infrastructure.
Large-grade New Zealand native pūriri and tītoki were installed to create an established evergreen screen from day one. Positioned along the site boundary, the mature trees provide immediate privacy while supporting biodiversity and long-term landscape value.
The Orbis planters also became a defining design feature, adding structure, texture and visual interest while demonstrating how functional planting infrastructure can enhance the overall landscape.
The Archipello. planters enabled Blackbridge Nurseries to successfully deliver a project that would not have been possible using conventional in-ground planting methods.
By avoiding excavation around critical underground services, the planters accommodated large specimen trees while achieving the required immediate screening. At the same time, they introduced a contemporary architectural element that enhanced the finished landscape, demonstrating how practical planting solutions can overcome complex site constraints without compromising design intent.
