FuturFiber® Made by Rubisco is a collaboration between Rubisco® and Advance Landscape Systems, bringing high-performance natural fibre geotextiles to the New Zealand market. The range uses hemp and wool for weed suppression, erosion control, planting stabilisation, moisture retention, and plant establishment. FuturFiber is 100% biodegradable, BioGro Certified for organic inputs, and supported by a Global GreenTag EPD compliant to ISO 14025 and EN 15804.
A Natural Partnership, Global First EPD, and Game-Changing Product Innovation.
As the infrastructure and landscape sectors transition toward low-carbon materials, natural fibre geotextiles are gaining recognition as credible, high-performing alternatives to synthetic products. One of the most significant developments in this space is Rubisco’s achievement of a certified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its wool and hemp geotextile, the first declaration of its kind internationally for a wool-hemp composite material. This milestone provides the industry with a robust, independently verified dataset that elevates natural fibres into the realm of scientifically validated engineering solutions.
In an innovative approach to erosion control and weed suppression, Advance Landscape Systems developed FuturFiber hemp and dag wool mulch matting, a natural fibre geotextile, using materials made by Rubisco.

Rubisco’s EPD, issued by Global GreenTag International and verified to ISO 14025 and EN 15804 +A2, establishes a transparent lifecycle profile of the material from raw fibre sourcing through manufacturing to end-of-life. For designers, engineers, and specifiers, it offers clarity and comparability: a standardised environmental footprint that can be confidently used in Green Star, LEED, and IS Rating Scheme projects. The certification confirms that natural fibres can deliver technical performance while offering significant environmental advantages over conventional synthetic geotextiles.
Rubisco began its EPD journey in September 2023 with a clear ambition: to demonstrate, with scientific rigour, the environmental integrity of its wool-hemp products. The process required extensive data collection covering energy use, transport, emissions, waste, and agricultural inputs, forming the foundation of a full Life Cycle Assessment. Independent scientists evaluated Canterbury-grown hemp to measure soil impacts and ecological outcomes, while Global GreenTag’s assessors conducted detailed audits across Rubisco’s Christchurch and Ashburton facilities. The resulting dataset underwent third-party review before receiving formal certification on 4 August 2025, a global first for a wool-hemp geotextile.
The outcome is a transparent, publicly verified account of FuturFiber’s product lifecycle performance. Beyond its environmental credentials, the material has already been proven in demanding applications, including Te Ahu a Turanga Manawatū Tararua Highway project, the IKEA Auckland site development, and the Waka Kotahi NZTA SH51 Awatoto Roundabout project. Its combination of tensile strength, permeability, and biodegradability, typically breaking down within 18-24 months, supports erosion control, slope stabilisation, and land rehabilitation while avoiding microplastic pollution.

Sustainability and Responsible Resource Stewardship
Environmental care is central to Advance Landscape Systems’ ethos, shaping every aspect of its operations from material sourcing to end-of-life outcomes. The company has long been committed to reducing its environmental footprint through responsible procurement, energy-efficient equipment, recycling initiatives such as the Plant Guard to Post programme, and the development of biodegradable alternatives to conventional landscaping products.
Advance’s approach is rooted in the belief that landscapers and specifiers can meaningfully reduce project-level impacts through thoughtful product selection. Whether on small-scale plantings or large commercial landscapes, the incorporation of earth-friendly materials helps to conserve natural resources, support biodiversity, and reduce embodied carbon. By adopting a proactive and transparent stance on sustainability, Advance aims to raise expectations across the landscaping industry and support the transition to regenerative practices.
Why Advance Partnered with Rubisco
The partnership between Advance Landscape Systems and Rubisco emerged from aligned values and a shared vision of a regenerative future. Rubisco’s story, grounded in the transformation of natural fibres into high-performing materials through regenerative agriculture and innovative design, resonated strongly with Advance’s mission. Rubisco’s philosophy centres on working in harmony with nature’s cycles, creating materials that perform effectively during use and safely return to the earth at their end of life. This synergy created a natural foundation for collaboration.
By combining Rubisco’s fibre innovation with Advance’s landscape sector expertise, the companies developed the FuturFiber range, a suite of hemp and wool geotextiles designed as economical, high-performing, and environmentally responsible solutions for erosion control, weed suppression and plant nurturing.
Development of the FuturFiber Range
FuturFiber exemplifies Advance’s commitment to responsible resourcing and environmental preservation. Produced from New Zealand-grown hemp and wool, the range is certified by BioGro for organic inputs and now carries an independently verified EPD, a first for a natural fibre geotextile in New Zealand. This provides designers, project partners, and regulators with confidence grounded in independently validated data.
The range has quickly demonstrated its practical value in major national projects. Its applications span erosion control, slope stabilisation, land revegetation, and weed suppression, providing a biodegradable alternative to plastic-based geotextiles.
As Rubisco CEO Guy Wills notes, Global GreenTag’s certification verifies that FuturFiber delivers measurable environmental benefits while eliminating microplastic concerns, a critical consideration for environmentally sensitive projects.
Through its combination of technical performance, traceable sourcing, and independently verified environmental impact, FuturFiber has become the leading natural fibre geotextile solution for New Zealand landscapes.

A New Benchmark for Natural Fibre Geotextiles
Rubisco’s EPD achievement, combined with Advance’s commitment to regenerative product development, sets a new benchmark for sustainable geotextile solutions. Together, the companies are demonstrating that it is possible to unite material performance with environmental responsibility. Natural fibres are no longer a secondary option, they are a scientifically validated, commercially viable, and future-ready choice for landscape and infrastructure projects across Aotearoa and beyond.
