Supporting the successful establishment of native planting in an exposed alpine environment through durable, sustainable landscape solutions.
Nestled on the northern slopes of Wānaka, Pembroke Heights is one of the region’s newest residential communities. This master-planned subdivision will eventually include reserves, green spaces, and around 400 homes. From the early stages, the landscape design focused on long-term sustainability, resilience, and biodiversity.
The Goal
The project aimed to create a low-maintenance, ecologically resilient landscape that supports native plant survival, enhances biodiversity, and aligns with Queenstown Lakes District Council objectives for sustainable public open spaces. A key feature of this stage was the stormwater basin, designed not only to manage runoff but also to function as a natural habitat and community amenity.

The Challenge
The exposed alpine environment posed unique challenges. Frost, strong winds, and pest browsing threatened the successful establishment of native plants. Ensuring strong plant survival required durable, environmentally responsible solutions that could protect young plantings while supporting the overall design vision.
The Solution
Advance Landscape Systems supplied FiberGuard 2.0 plant guards to protect newly planted native species. These biodegradable, lightweight, and easy-to-assemble guards shield plants from pests, wind, and frost, while naturally breaking down over time, leaving no long-term environmental footprint.
In addition, black painted timber stakes and natural hessian tree ties were used for street tree and reserve plantings. These products provide strong structural support during the establishment phase, while maintaining a clean, consistent aesthetic and supporting sustainable landscape practices.
Performance Outcome
The result is a resilient, low-maintenance landscape where ecological function and public amenity coexist. Native planting, led by Matukituki Natives, enhances biodiversity and reinforces the site’s natural character. The combination of FiberGuard 2.0 plant guards, painted timber tree stakes, and hessian tree ties supported early-stage plant survival and reduced long-term maintenance needs.
By supplying innovative, sustainable plant protection and establishment products, Advance Landscape Systems played a key role in delivering Pembroke Heights’ vision: a thriving, naturally beautiful landscape that supports both the community and the environment.
